Moyra and Driskoll sped across Curston until at last they reached their destination: a little house next to the low wall separating Broken Town from the Wizards’ Quarter. The building was a mere shell of its former self. All the windows were shattered, and large chunks of wood were missing from the walls. There was no door, only the rotted remains of a tilted doorframe.

Moyra held out her hand, palm up, her eyes darting all around the area. Then she waved Driskoll forward, leading him around to the side of the house.

Driskoll picked his way over broken boards, glass shards, and overgrown weeds. The side of the house nestled against the edge of the crumbling wall. He found Moyra standing in front of a large rock in the wall that looked as though it weighed a hundred pounds. She leaned over and began tugging on the edge of the stone block.

“What are you doing?” Driskoll asked. “We’ll never be able to move that thing. It looks like it weighs a ton.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” Moyra grunted as her fingers dug into the crevices in the giant rock. “The real piece of this wall was removed years ago by a couple of thieves in the guild. This one is made of wood and plaster, but it fools most folks.”

“What is this place?” Driskoll looked over his shoulder at the crumbling house behind him. “It looks like a dump.”

Moyra laughed. “That house, my friend, is the most top-secret bolthole in all of Curston.”

“A bolthole? You mean a place thieves use to meet and to stash their stolen goods, right?” asked Driskoll.

“Yes, but how do you know what a bolthole is?” Moyra gave up her battle with the rock and stared at Driskoll. She sounded not only surprised, but a little peeved.

“Hey,” said Driskoll, “Kellach may be the smart one, but I’m the one who listens when people talk. Dad knows about some of these, but he thinks that not letting on that he knows—and not letting the thieves guild know that he knows—might be handy.”

“Hmmm. You dad is smart. I can see where Kellach gets it,” Moyra said with a smirk. Driskoll swatted her lightly, although he knew she was egging him on.

“Well, I’m sure your dad doesn’t know about this one.” Moyra looked at Driskoll. “And you’d better not tell him.”

Driskoll held up his hand. “On my Silver Dragon honor.”

Moyra nodded. “This bolthole may look like an abandoned house from the outside, but underneath lies a storage room, a locked treasure room, and a room for meetings. And under this stone,” Moyra grunted again as she tugged harder on the rock, “lies the secret entrance.”

“Help me here,” Moyra continued. “This rubble isn’t as heavy as stone, but it’s pretty cumbersome. With the two of us, though, we should be able to move it quickly. It tilts back like this.”

She pointed out a cleverly hidden set of hinges beneath the fake piece of rubble.

“How’d you find out about this rock?” asked Driskoll as he sidled up to Moyra and grabbed hold.
